Atlantic Water Gardens Pond De-icer - 300 Watts

300 Watts for Winter Pond Maintenance

The Atlantic Water Gardens pond de-icer at 300 watts is a floating electric heater designed to maintain an open hole in the surface ice of a garden pond through Canadian winters. Rather than heating the entire pond — which would be energy-prohibitive — the de-icer keeps a small area of the water surface ice-free, allowing the exchange of oxygen and the release of toxic gases produced by decomposing organic matter under the ice. Without this gas exchange, fish and overwintering aquatic life in sealed ponds can suffocate even in relatively short cold snaps.

Operation

Float the de-icer on the pond surface. When water temperature drops near freezing, the de-icer's thermostat activates the 300-watt heating element. Heat rising from the element keeps a circle of water approximately 12 to 18 inches (30 to 46 cm) in diameter ice-free. The thermostat cycles the element on and off as conditions require — the unit only draws full power when needed, keeping operating costs reasonable through the winter season.

Safety Notes

Always use with a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. Do not use in ponds without a GFCI circuit. Do not attempt to melt existing ice by striking it — use the de-icer only. Place in the shallowest area of the pond for best efficiency, away from the deepest fish resting zone.
