Surface Aeration for Smaller Ponds and Features
The Atlantic Water Gardens Shallow Water Diffuser is optimised for ponds and water features under 1.2 metres (4 feet) deep. Rather than destratifying a deep water column, the shallow diffuser maximises gas exchange at the water surface, dissolving oxygen directly into the top layer of water where most fish spend their time. It is ideal for smaller decorative ponds, water gardens, and any installation where pond depth makes a deep-water diffuser impractical.
Surface Aeration vs. Deep Destratification
In shallow ponds, thermal stratification is less of a concern than in deep ones — but oxygen depletion is not. Hot summer days cause oxygen levels to crash in shallow, sun-exposed water gardens with heavy fish loads. The shallow diffuser positions the bubble release point in the upper water column, maximising surface agitation and gas exchange where it matters most. Multiple shallow diffusers can be linked from a single air pump to cover larger surface areas or multiple feature basins.
| Placement | Upper water column / shallow bottom (under 1.2 m / 4 ft) |
|---|---|
| Bubble Type | Fine bubble aeration |
| Tubing Connection | 3/8" barb (standard airline) |
| Compatible With | Typhoon Air Pumps, TPD aeration cabinets |
| Safe For | Koi, goldfish, aquatic plants, turtles, wildlife |
How to Use
Position the shallow diffuser in the area of the pond with heaviest fish activity or highest heat exposure. Connect standard 3/8-inch airline tubing from your air pump or cabinet compressor. The 30 LPM Typhoon can power up to two shallow diffusers simultaneously. Use in winter to maintain an ice-free area around the diffuser, allowing gas exchange throughout freeze-over periods common across Canada.
Ideal for decorative ponds, water gardens, and small koi ponds up to 5,000 L (1,300 gal) in depth under 1.2 metres.
