Important Shipping Information
These Matala mats are oversized and require additional freight charges. We'll contact you with a shipping quote before your order ships. Alternatively, we can cut the mats in half at no extra freight cost—just let us know when ordering.
Low Density Biological Filtration Media
Matala filter media represents the latest generation of filtration technology for koi ponds and aquaculture systems. Made from curly fiber Thermo-Polypropylene Compounds (TPPC), these mats deliver both mechanical and biological filtration in a single, versatile solution.
Why Choose Matala?
- Rigid yet flexible design maintains proper water flow and prevents channeling
- Exceptionally high surface area supports robust biofilm development
- Random fiber structure creates micro-turbulence for longer water contact time
- Easy to cut and customize for your specific filter configuration
- Durable, eco-friendly, and long-lasting
How It Works
The layered fiber structure creates interstitial spaces where beneficial bacteria colonize. As water passes through, gentle mixing and turbulent flow maximize contact time between water and biofilm, dramatically improving filtration efficiency. This allows you to use smaller or fewer filter tanks while maintaining superior water quality.

Density Options
| Density Grade | Best For |
|---|---|
| Black (Extra Low) | Initial mechanical filtration, pre-filter stage |
| Green (Medium) | Balanced mechanical and biological filtration |
| Blue (High) | Advanced biological filtration, mature systems |
| Grey (Extra High) | Maximum biofilm support, polishing stage |
Easy Maintenance
Clean gently with pond water using a submersible pump or bucket. Avoid aggressive cleaning—your filter media hosts essential bacteria that keep your pond ecosystem balanced. Light rinsing removes excess debris while preserving the beneficial biofilm.
